Usnea Tincture
from $6.50
sold out
(1 oz, 2 oz & 4 oz )
Usnea Tincture, 1:4, 80% of wildcrafted Usnea spp.
Usnea is a lichen, which which is part fungus, part algae. Usnic acid is the main active medicinal constituent of this plant which has antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. We call this plant "old man's beard" in my region as it's common name. But this plant is known for its antibiotic and antifungal properties also, which helps for GI infections, bacterial infections, bronchitis, colds, coughs, uti's and more.
There has previously been information put out about Usnea that it must be tinctured using hot alcohol, but new evidence has shown that isn't necessary. And many of us herbalists have used Usnea quite wonderfully for many years without tincturing in hot alcohol.
Beware, this plant has a copy-cat - but you can identify usnea by this white, threadlike inner core when you pull apart the plant.
Usnea is also at great risk for over-harvesting. For most usnea, make sure to only use ecologically harvested usnea, often best from a downed branch after a storm. The plant material used for this tincture was obtained through a sacred trade with another practitioner. This practitioner had viable herbs that were going to be destroyed as that practitioner had lost their business and couldn't keep all of their herbs. So I traded some of my products (their kiddos had a cough at the time so I traded large quantities of cough syrup) for these incredible herbs, immediately tinctured them, and now can offer them at a very affordable price to people who may need these healing herbs.

+++++INFORMATION ABOUT MY TINCTURES+++++
I'm so excited to now offer tinctures, syrups, elixirs, vinegars and more remedies on my Etsy site! And I'm offering these items for a great deal less than others are selling these items. Why? For a few reasons.
One, because many of these tinctures and remedies have been created through the many classes I teach. I have to mix up the formula BEFORE the class, then we create the formula again IN class, and every time, I have quite a bit of the finished formula left over. Which I have used these additional remedies in my own home medicine cabinet for years, but now I just have TOO much plant medicine for my family to use alone. So I offer these remedies to you at this superb discount so that you too can use herbal remedies in a cost effective manner. I'm well-trained (and teach many classes) on the proper weight to volume tincture creation for each herb, and I research Moore, Tilgner, Buhner, Easley, Cech and others to decide which percentage of alcohol is best for each herb. My herbs almost exclusively organic and the few I can't get organically, are wildcrafted. The herbs are also continually rotated through, so I never have old, useless herbs being used as medicine.
Another reason is that I want to carry a few tinctures and remedies that I use quite often with my own clients. So some medicines I want to be cost effectively available for my clientele.
And lastly, in addition to tinctures and remedies from my classes and for clients, I also grow what is getting to be a large herb garden at my home. I mostly grow herbs for my herbal products to be infused in oils, but some herbs I just grow because I am fascinated with them, or I want to see all the stages of growth from the beginning to end of a particular herb. And often once I harvest these herbs, I'll put them directly into alcohol to make a tincture. And it usually makes a LOT! A perfect example of this is my elecampane tincture. I watched and watered and grew this plant for two beautiful years, so I could harvest the 2nd year root. It was a fascinating experience as I watched this plant grow more than 7 feet tall, gorgeous yellow flowers blooming and when I dug up the root, which took help from my husband and kids, there was SO MUCH root. So I put it all in alcohol and now have the most incredible brownish rose colored tincture to sell here on Etsy. So much love goes into these tinctures and remedies - but take advantage of these medicines now! As the tinctures with my handwritten ingredients on them, likely won't be replenished. Once I sell out, I likely won't make more. Green Blessings to you and hope you enjoy the magick of herbal medicine!
